Supplication (Dua)

Rabbanâ Isrif ‘Annâ ‘Adhâba Jahannama, Inna ‘Adhâbahâ Kâna Gharâmâ. Innahâ Sâ’at Mustaqarran Wa-Muqâmâ

Our Lord, turn away from us the punishment of Hell. Its punishment is endless and severe. It is a terrible place to settle or stay

"Our Lord, turn away from us the punishment of Hell…"

We begin by asking Allah directly — “Rabbana” — because He is the one who controls everything. We're not just asking to be forgiven; we’re asking Allah to block, push away, and shield us from the burning punishment of Jahannam (Hellfire).

"Indeed, its punishment is ever-adhering…"

The word "gharaman" means clinging, inescapable, and ongoing. Hell’s torment is not a one-time event. It sticks. It haunts. It doesn’t go away.

This reminds us that Hell is not just pain — it’s eternal regret. It’s a punishment that follows you forever.

"Indeed, it is a terrible place to settle and stay…"

Two words are used:

  • Mustaqarr: A temporary stay
  • Muqam: A permanent stay

Whether short-term or long-term, Hell is unbearable. We are begging Allah: Don’t even let us stay there for a moment.
